Job Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director and collaborating with CCTL staff and relevant campus partners, the Assistant Director for AI and Learning will design, develop, and implement programming and resources to 1) support faculty and instructors in articulating and implementing effective, appropriate, and evidence-informed pedagogical approaches to AI in their courses, with attention to the potential learning opportunities and challenges presented by AI tools; 2) support the development of innovative teaching practices with AI tools; and 3) support students in the learning-focused and appropriate use of AI tools in their education. With support from the Executive Director, the Assistant Director will build on, enhance, and expand existing AI teaching and learning initiatives at the University, supporting the CCTL in promoting thoughtful, forward-looking approaches to the place of AI in a liberal arts education. The individual in this role will be able to make a significant impact on teaching and learning programs at the CCTL and on AI pedagogy at the University of Chicago. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in AI tools and their implications for teaching and learning in higher education, have experience and interest in designing pedagogical programs and resources, and successful college teaching experience.
Responsibilities
- In collaboration with CCTL staff and relevant campus partners, designs, develops, and implements programming and resources on effective, innovative, and evidence-informed pedagogical approaches to AI and related technologies.
- Develops and implements programming and resources to support the design of AI-aware teaching methods and assessment strategies, including rethinking learning goals and assignment design.
- Develops and implements programming and resources to support effective and responsible integration of AI tools into courses, in-class activities, and assessments.
- Develops models and examples of innovative activities and assignments that make use of AI tools.
- Provides consultation support for faculty and instructors on teaching and learning issues related to AI.
- Supports divisions, schools, departments, and programs in creating a culture and norms for appropriate AI use based in local disciplinary and curricular values and goals.
- Develops and updates online resources that support faculty and instructors in making informed choices about the role of AI in their teaching.
- Stays current on advancements in AI technology and the release of AI tools as they relate to teaching and learning in higher education to inform CCTL, College, and University initiatives.
- Stays current on developments in national discussions and the scholarly literature relevant to the teaching and learning implications of AI tools to inform CCTL, College, and University initiatives.
- In collaboration with the Senior Assistant Director of Assessment and Scholarship, provides support for the assessment of AI-aware teaching and learning practices.
- In collaboration with the CCTL team and relevant partner offices, develops programming and support for students on learning in the context of AI and responsible use of AI tools.
- Develops and updates online resources that support students in making informed, responsible choices about effective, appropriate, and innovative use of AI tools in their learning.
- Consults with relevant College and University offices on best practices for supporting student awareness and responsible use of AI.
- Supports and contributes to efforts to assess student attitudes and use of AI in their learning to inform programmatic efforts.
- Presents program content.
- Serves as liaison with internal and external stakeholders.
- Performs other related work as needed.
