JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Instructional Consultant of the Teaching and Learning Center collaborates with faculty, academic programs, and colleges to improve and enhance quality teaching and learning. Works collaboratively with campus constituencies in support of the institution’s goal of ensuring student access and success and the effective and efficient use of resources. Provides advanced-level direction in instructional innovation and current design theory and active learning. Assists faculty with their teaching via lecture, seminar, research, clinical, practice, and lab with face-to-face, hybrid, and online coursework to support faculty and staff as well as contribute to improved learning.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Provides advanced-level consultation and leadership for curriculum and instruction, including face-to-face and electronic (email, video, telephone, and other forms of communication).
  2. Provides recommendations for instructional design, sequencing of instruction, and use of assessments. Assesses the use of techniques and technologies in academic programs to provide recommendations for delivering instruction.
  3. Consults with faculty to identify areas for pedagogical improvement within the course curriculum. Conducts course reviews in order to identify instructional opportunities and analyze areas for improvement.
  4. Provides individual and group faculty consultations related to course design, redesign, and development.
  5. Designs, implements, and manages professional development programs to improve faculty/staff curriculum, instruction, and technology knowledge and skills for effective integration of instructional design principles, including initiatives related to creating inclusive and equitable learning spaces.
  6. Analyzes, prioritizes, and assesses the needs for faculty professional development in the areas of curriculum, instruction, techniques, and technologies for delivering quality courses.
  7. Creates written and electronic resources (website, newsletters, social media, etc.) on quality teaching techniques and technologies.
  8. Collaborates with TLC staff to assess the effectiveness of programming and curricular change on student learning.
  9. Develops workshops, instructional materials, and outreach for educators including faculty, residents, and graduate students.
  10. Researches and evaluates new and emerging curriculum and instruction pedagogies and strategies applicable to an academic health science center.
  11. Works with UTHSC faculty interested in the scholarship of teaching and learning to prepare work for publication or presentations.
  12. Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

EDUCATION: Master’s Degree.  (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of teaching in higher education including experience developing and delivering courses, instructional design, providing consultation or support to higher education faculty and staff, and leading teams supporting faculty with course design and development; OR Bachelor’s Degree and five (5) years of teaching in higher education including experience developing and delivering courses, instructional design, providing consultation or support to higher education faculty and staff, and leading teams supporting faculty with course design and development.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Extensive knowledge of instructional design and adult learning theories.
  • Experience identifying, recommending, and implementing best practices for inclusive and equitable learning spaces.
  • Experience with quantitative analysis and a record of publication.
  • Knowledge of and experience with faculty roles and responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Ability for strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn new skills.
  • Willingness and ability to remain flexible in roles and responsibilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate with non-technical and technically perceptive users.
  • Strong desire and skills to serve faculty and staff clients.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty and staff remotely and face-to-face.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others in an academic community.
